Timotheos Ailouros

Timotheos Ailouros
Monophysite patriarch of Alexandria (qq.v.) from 457-ca. 460 and 476-477. He was called Ailouros ("cat" in Greek) by his enemies, who imagined him creeping about at night to stir up mob violence against his Orthodox (q.v.) enemies. He and his successor Peter Mongos (q.v.) led the attack on the decrees of the Fourth Ecumenical Council at Chalcedon (q.v.), which caused Leo I (q.v.) to exile Ailouros to Gangra (q.v.). During the usurpation of Basiliskos (q.v.), he was recalled briefly. He died in 477.
